Impossible to Behave:  Sexual Assault in Women’s Correctional Facilities

Featuring Morey Williams, Ph.D.

Professor of Philosophy

Villanova University

The Ethics Program and the Augustine & Culture Seminar Program

This presentation brings to light how women's correctional institutions uphold conflicting norms that make it impossible for women to "behave," i.e. adhere to one rule in the institution without breaking another. We will look at the history of women's correctional institutions, particularly in the state of NJ, and examine what these institutions endeavor to accomplish through their "corrective" practices. In particular, we will concentrate on the role that sexual assault plays in women's correctional institutions, focusing on the relationship between sexual assault and the concept of "behaving" properly in a women's prison.
